Tongaat aggregate plant to boost Lafarge output
- Published 05/16/2008
| Lafarge Aggregates and Concrete said yesterday it expected production capacity in KwaZulu-Natal to rise by nearly 150% to 500000 tons a year after the completion of its R62m aggregates crushing plant in Tongaat. Last month the company announced that it had increased production capacity by 70% in Western Cape with the completion of a R51m upgrade at its Peak Quarry. MD Ulrich Aumüller said more upgrades of quarry plants were expected nationwide as Lafarge ramped up output to meet construction market demand. It was expected to grow for the next five years, he said. Aumüller said the Tongaat plant aimed to meet growing demand as a result of residential and leisure industry development in KwaZulu-Natal, as well as building of the King Shaka International Airport and Dube Trade Port. “The quarry,” he said, “will almost triple its capacity from 25000 tons a month to 70000 to address the need in the region for premium quality aggregate.” The new plant, on KwaZulu-Natal’s north coast, will produce all aggregates from road layer materials and aggregates for asphalt to the entire product range used by the ready-mix and concrete product industries. Aumüller said the plant would create direct and indirect job opportunities for 68 people. “For the mid-term we are also counting on attracting beneficiation industries, in particular asphalt and concrete product manufacturers, thereby creating additional jobs.” The Lafarge unit operates 66 fixed and mobile ready-mix concrete plants and 24 aggregate quarries in SA, servicing all construction industry sectors. The business unit in SA is part of international materials group Lafarge, which operates almost 2000 quarries and ready-mix concrete plants in 23 countries on four continents. |
